Shane Unger
Why did you choose a career in health and fitness?I have always been a “people” person, and have always loved sports and fitness. So I made it a point in my life to combine what I am good at with what I love to do and make a career out of it.
What qualifies you to do this work?A degree in Kinesiology from Cal State Fullerton, my extensive, first-hand knowledge of numerous sports and my ability to motivate all contribute to why I am qualified to be a personal trainer.
What sports have you played and at what level?I played baseball through college at Mt. San Antonio College and into rookie ball for the Seattle Mariners. I played Water Polo into college, also at Mt. San Antonio College. I played Club soccer for 8 years, until my junior year in high school, when baseball required my complete focus. I now play golf frequently and am currently a 6 handicap, and a regional qualifier for the REMAX world long drive contest. 385 yards in competition.
What is your favorite life quotation?"That which does not kill us makes us stronger." Friedrich Nietzsche
What is your biggest personal training success story? My biggest achievement as a trainer so far has been helping a client lose almost 50 pounds in 6 weeks.
What is the biggest health myth?Diets are a huge myth. The problem with diets is that they only work while you are on them. Eating properly needs to be a lifestyle change, not a temporary solution.
If you could change the world health wise, how would you do it?I would teach our youth how to eat healthy and show them that eating healthy can taste good, too.
How has fitness influenced you mindset towards life?Fitness hasn’t just influenced my mindset towards life, it has defined it.
What fitness figure or athlete do you admire and why?I admire Greg Maddux. He made it to the top with hard work and perseverance. He was smaller than everyone else, and didn’t throw as hard, but through his determination he became one of the greatest pitchers ever.
What benefits do you see take place as someone gets into shapeNot just weight loss, which is obvious, but mood improves, energy levels rise, overall well-being and outlook on life also greatly improve.
